The Eswatini Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (EWADE) is a government entity, whose primary focus is on mobilising people for agricultural development on Eswatini Nation Land and ensuring constructive use of water resources which have been provided by the government of Eswatini to stimulate food security, poverty alleviation and social invigoration in disadvantaged parts of the country.

The enterprise promotes participation of smallholder farmer organizations in irrigated commercial agriculture, as part of a poverty eradication program for rural areas, whilst also enhancing private sector development through the active participation of small and medium enterprises in agricultural development.

The EWADE is excited to play a role in transforming the agricultural landscape in the country which is still the lead contributor of national GDP.

Improved water supply and sanitation, and better management of water resources, can boost countries’ economic growth and can contribute greatly to poverty reduction.

The EWADE Strategic Thrust

The Eswatini Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (EWADE) Strategic Thrust, outlined in the 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, focuses on advancing agricultural transformation in Eswatini. This involves addressing sustainability, economic growth, and resilience challenges in alignment and collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and other key stakeholders. The main elements of the EWADE’s strategy include:

1Stakeholder Engagement and Management
Emphasizes partnerships with technical experts, government bodies (like the Ministry of Agriculture), and local communities to enhance project success and community alignment.
2Human Capital Development
Aims to attract and retain skilled professionals, recognizing human resources as essential for sustainable growth.
3Governance and Ethics
Strengthens transparency, accountability, and ethical standards, ensuring responsible management practices and public trust.
4Operational Financial Sustainability
Prioritizes reducing dependency on government funding by developing a robust financial strategy, exploring commercial revenue, and improving funding proposal capabilities.
5Growth and Sustainability
In response to the nearing completion of large water projects, EWADE focuses on expanding small water development initiatives, maintaining existing infrastructure, and potentially extending services to the wider SADC region.

These pillars align with national priorities and SDGs, particularly focusing on poverty reduction, food security, and sustainable water resource management. Through these initiatives, the EWADE aims to continue supporting Eswatini's agriculture sector while promoting self-reliance and regional leadership in water and agricultural development.
